Biographical Text

Ellen Fitz Pendleton was an educator who spent her career at Wellesely College. After earning a B.A. at the school, she was a tutor, a full time instructor of mathematics, a secretary, and a dean. Pendelton also served as the sixth president of Wellesley College from 1911-1936. During her presidency, she oversaw the recovery of the college from a fire in 1914, the construction of many new buildings, and the creation of a $10 million endowment. Pendleton was a pacifist and supportor of academic freedom, and she encouraged her undergraduates to take varied electives. Pendleton died in 1936.
