Biographical Text

Harriot Stanton Blanch was a Woman's Suffrage activist and the daughter of Elizabeth Cady Stanton. She attended Vassar College and the Boston School of Oratory; after graduation, she became a tutor in Germany. Blatch and her family lived in Hampshire, England, where she studied rural English working women's conditions. She also worked with English social reform groups, including the Women's Local Government Society, the Fabian Society, and the Women's Franchise League. In 1902, Blatch returned to the United States, where she joined the Women's Trade Union League and founded the Equality League of Self-Supporting Women (later renamed the Women's Political Union). In 1910 she organized and led the New York suffrage parade. During World War I, she led the Women's Land Army, and in 1920 she joined the National Woman's Party to fight for passage of the Equal Rights Amendment. Blatch also wrote books on the suffrage movement, including Mobilizing Woman Power and A Woman's Point of View.

Blatch married William Henry Blatch, Jr. in 1882. They had two children together, though only one lived past childhood. Blatch died in 1940.
