Biographical Text

George W. Kirchwey was a lawyer and educator who supported efforts for penal reform and peace. He earned a law degree from Yale in 1879, and he practiced law in Albany, NY, for ten years before becoming a law professor at Union College and Columbia University. From 1901-1910, he served as dean of the Columbia Law School and edited the American Journal of International Law. Kirchwey was a noted penologist who spent much of his professional career engaged in prison reform and elevating the practice of criminal law. He was an author and noted lecturer and frequently lectured at the University of Chicago, where he introduced social work students to the need for reform in the criminal justice system. Kirchwey was an opponent of capital punishment, and he became an active advocate for peace, cofounding the New York Peace Society in 1906 and serving as president of the American Peace Society in 1917. His work in criminal justice reform and Progressive Party politics overlapped with the work of Jane Addams, and the two of them served on a party platform committee in 1912. Kirchwey died in 1942.

Kirchwey married Dora Child Wendell, and the couple had four children. His daughter Freda Kirchwey was the editor of The Nation from 1933-1955.
