Miss Jane Addams,
Hulls Cove,
Maine.

Dear Miss Addams:

You know better than anyone else about the original plan of the Barnett Fellowship. Dame Henrietta and Mr. Nunn expressed views which certainly sounded very unlike. You and she have had a real understanding on the matter. Dame Henrietta wants, I believe, to strengthen the bond between the Barnett fellow and the Barnett House members of her Committee, without seeming to overlook the others. Perhaps if Mr. Byron were chosen and lived at Toynbee Hall, that might bring the two elements together.

I think Miss Dewar's case is an interesting one. She would like to spend a year in America and a year abroad. Captain Ellis told me that he believed that in the next year or two, the British Federation of Settlements would be only too glad to take her on part time and let her do international work the rest of the time. She has just returned from the East, and was available when I was in England. In order that she should not waste any time, I suggested that she go at once to the Continent and work there in a House I know very well. I said that perhaps by the middle of the winter, it might be possible to arrange to have her come here. In the meantime, she is getting European experience. It is very nice to think you are interested in what we may be able to do for her. Do let me have the benefit of any suggestions you have.

With many thanks for your letter,

Very sincerely yours,

Ellen W. Coolidge [signed]
