Very dear J. A.
We are at Chexbres (over Vevey) for Yella Hertzkas Econ. Con. The Ex. Com meets Tuesday at Geneva. I had a day, before things began, for talk with M. S. which was very worth while. She seems in uncannily good shape for her & her waved bob makes her look younger.
I found awaiting me a letter wh. took my breath away. Miss Elsie Zimmern of the Joint Standing Com (of the [illegible] Suffrage All., the I. Co of W the Univ. Women & the WIL) [illegible] ↑writes me it has↓ put my name in nomination [page 2] (along with Frau Larsen Jahn and another Am'n a Miss Abel Henderson) for the position [of] left vacant on the Mandates Commission by the death of Mrs. Wicksell, of wh. I had not heard. It seems she had an operation & seemed to be going to do well but did not recover. I am terribly sorry. I loved Mrs Wicksell as well as admiring her. I saw her last, last spring, at Mrs. Forbes's.
Now what do you think about my letting my name stand? -- it having been put up without consulting me & there being other nominations surely I can do so ↑withdraw↓ if it seems best [page 3]
D. D. consulted me as to whether I was willing to be put in a semi-presidential position in our own WIL in case the Annual Meeting did not find someone better to take Mrs. Hull's place ↑& I agreed↓. It would make me less useful there if I were always running over to Geneva at moments that might prove the most inconvenient and had my time & interest ↑so↓ largely absorbed over here. If you have a decided opinion I wish you would cable me per Willif ; favor or inexpedient or if you feel very definitely & strongly so against acceptance -- NO [page 4]
↑I am meeting here↓ I am sorry that I am going to have to be in opposition on so many points
Balkan Congress,
Management of M. I.
Consultation of Ex Com until next congress
So far the weather is very serene and Yella Hertzka is at her most winning and reasonable, affectionate too to me after Mary [illegible] failed to answer any letters from me for a long time.
Three are here: Y. H., Bennett & Chenevix, Mme Duchêne looking whiter & older (her grandbaby having been ill all winter w. grippe & jaundice). Gertrude B [was] fine for us, ↑but very thin↓ and L G H [page 5] and Dr. Augspurg, not of the Com. but here for an outing & and to be among us, & very welcome. We discussed yesterday p.m. with Miss Mundt of the [I.L.O.], “rationalization” (scientific management, which they were calling "Taylorism" when I was last here) and in the weary unemployment Lucie Dejardin having contributed ↑by mail↓ the rapport she had been asked to prepare.
I have told Miss Sheepshanks & Miss Bennett about the Lauterbach money for it does appear to really be coming to us and our leaving to Mme [page 6] Ramondt [illegible] of telling the Com. Dear Mme Ramondt! I hate to think her [dear?] friends not the right people for the [illegible]. I think this money may enable to refer the whole question of the M. I. to a sub-com. -- the matter of purchase pro & con and its purpose and management meanwhile. M. S. is not ↑at↓ all approving of the present course of things. Mrs Lloyd has written a very interesting letter about making more use of the M I to draw in young people. [page 7]
I must get up & wash for my Croc of hot water has come. As I look up I see, through almost the top of my window, ethereal snowy heights veiled with mist below.
Goodbye till my next.
Your loving and scared
E. G. B.
My love to dear Mary Smith
