Dear Miss Balch,
I presume you think I have never done anything about the peace prize for Jane Addams. As a matter of fact, I wrote to Madam Larsen-Jahn last year, as you wished me to do, but I received no reply. I sent that letter via the W.I.L. in Geneva.
Last September I saw Madam Larsen-Jahn in Geneva and she said if I would give her my name and address she would write me the instructions as she was too busy to give them to me at that time. I gave her my card with my address on it but again did not hear from her. Since recommendations must be in by February, I cabled Madam Larsen-Jahn about 2 weeks ago to write instructions immediately, but I have not heard from her.
Miss Boynton and I have discussed the matter and considered people who might recommend Miss Addams. I also discussed the matter with Miss Sheepshanks in Geneva.
Miss Boynton and I agreed that the following people would probably be very glad to recommend Miss Addams, if their attention were directed to the matter: Mrs. Woodrow Wilson, Mr. Manley Hudson, Dr. Alice Hamilton, Miss Grace Abbott, Mr. Filene, Gov. Smith of New York, President Lowell?, Mr. Herbert Hoover, Mr. Rappard of Geneva, David Starr Jordan, Mr. Hughes?, Mr. Brandeis, Mr. Taft?, Miss Mary [Woolley], and in England Lady Courtney, Lady Mary Murray and Lady Astor.
We also considered the people through whom some of these might be reached. Perhaps you have suggestions along this line also. You probably can add other names to the list.
I presume we could really find out about how to go ahead in this country. Madam Larsen-Jahn says that recommendations should come from various countries and should be repeated year after year. That is what the Committee expects.
Please let me know whether you think we ought to ahead.
