Biographical Text

John Sherman Hoyt attended St. Paul's School in Concord, New Hampshire, graduating in 1888, and then attended Columbia School of Mines, graduating in 1890. He was the Director and on the board of executives for the American Car & Foundry Company. Hoyt was also a founder, trustee, and vice president of the Boy Scouts of America, serving as National Council Vice President for Finance and being a member of the National Council Executive Board and Advisory Board. Hoyt was very dedicated to scouting, and his estate on Continent Island in the Tokeneke section of Darien, Connecticut was often used as a scouts camp during the summer. In 1926, he helped finance the original Darien Scout Cabin, and in 1947 he donated 18 acres of land to the Alfred W. Dater Council, which became the Five Mile River Camp. In 1926, Hoyt was one of the recipients of the Boy Scout Silver Buffalo Award.

Hoyt married Ethel Phelps Stokes in 1905. They had six children together, though one did not survive infancy. Hoyt died in 1954.
