WOMEN'S INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE FOR PEACE AND FREEDOM
Dear [Madeleine] Doty,
I sent the Manifesto ↑to Chinese women↓ with the English reservation to Mrs. Grover Clark, an American Woman whose husband edits the Peking Leader. They have both recently been in the United States and made a most favorable impression among liberals everywhere. They are absolutely conversant with the Chinese situation and very sympathetic. I have asked Mrs. Clark to have the Manifesto duplicated and sent to other organizations which she may consider desirable. I have also sent it to Mrs. Zen who we met in China and who had much to do with the Federation of Chinese Women in Shanghai and to a Miss Lee, Dean of Women in Nanking University, thus sending it to the three of the most troubled cities, although I am sure that Mrs. Clark will scatter it much more widely than that.
I discussed the resolutions from the International Executive Committee at the National Convention of the W.I.L. which has just been held in Cleveland. Instead of sending anyone over from the United States with Mrs. Drevet it seemed to them very much better to ask Mrs. Clark to do what she could to represent us. She and her sister, who lives near Chicago, have long been devoted members of the W.I.L., and have many personal friends in the organization. It was in Mrs. Clark's house in Peking that we held our W.I.L. Meetings when I was in China. She could do very much more than anyone else whom we might send. We appropriated, from the National, $400 or $500 if necessary for her use in China to spend any way she felt useful. I really think this is better than sending anyone over from the United States. At any rate after careful discussion that is what the American Section decided to do. Will you let the other members of the International Board know about this decision?
We have heard nothing more about Mde. Drevet. Will you let me know what her plans are?
Devotedly yours,
Jane Addams [signed]
