Messrs Alexander & Keenan, 54 Wall Street,
Dear Sirs,
Miss Jane Addams and Miss Detzer have both sent me letters from yourselves relating to the bequest of Amanda Lauterbach to the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom. Your letter of March 23 was apparently late in reaching Miss Addams owing to her absence on a journey but you have doubtless now received her letter.
She is asking me to serve as Treasurer of the W.I.L.P.F. if I am elected by the Executive Committee as such and I am agreeing to do so. Miss Addams also asks me to reply to the questions put to her in your letter of March 23. I am temporarily away from home and lack necessary documents but will do so as far as I can without them.
(1) the W.I.L.P.F. is not incorporated
(2) it has consequently no charter
(3) I will send a copy of the Constitution as soon as I can get it from home,
[illegible] (3-5) I was Secretary-Treasurer from May, 1919, till my resignation on grounds of health in the autumn of 1922. Since then I think that the Financial Secretary has acted as Treasurer but I will answer this more precisely when I connect with my papers.
A vote is now being taken at the suggestion of Miss Addams as to whether the Executive Committee will incorporate the League in New York State. [page 2]
(7) I believe that the Executive Committee has power to vote the incorporation of the League but will submit the Constitution to you for your consideration.
I note with pleasure that Miss Addams is asking you to act on our behalf and remain
very truly yours,
Emily Greene Balch.
