THE CHICAGO DAILY JOURNAL
Jan. 18, 1927
My dear Mrs. Hamburger:
The Journal is pleased to acknowledge receipt of the resolutions passed by your board of directors protesting the attack of Capt. Ferre Watkins, commander of the Illinois department of the American Legion, upon the name of Miss Jane Addams. Those resolutions are in line with others passed by various leading organizations of women in this city and sent to The Journal.
This newspaper appreciates the high purpose of the resolutions of protest. The Journal is second to none in its admiration of Miss Jane Addams and in its appreciation of the great service she has rendered to this city and to humanity. Capt. Ferre Watkins' remarks were printed in The Journal of Nov. 10, 1926, in a news story, and were in no way the expression of the opinion of The Journal, which reserves its opinions for editorial expression. A great volume of opinion on every imaginable subject is published, and to a great deal of this opinion of The Journal is opposed. We realize, of course, that you thoroughly understand this is so.
The Journal always invites and welcomes expression of opinion by its readers, and it thanks you for forwarding the resolutions passed by your organization.
Very truly yours,
