My dear Mr. Kennedy,
I made a report on the completion of our half of the Barnett Fellowship Fund at the International Settlements Meeting in Paris last June and reported that I held a check for $12,750.00. Mr. [Mallon], Warden of Toynbee Hall, who was at the Paris Conference agreed with me that it would be best to deliver the check in person to Dame Henrietta Barnett. I met her ↑in London↓ on my way from Paris to London ↑Dublin↓ and delivered the check and received from her a receipt for the same. I did not see any other members of the Committee as they were already scattered for the Summer, but Dame Henrietta assured me that the arrangements we had made with the Committee were quite satisfactory and would be carried out.
We lately had a visit at Hull House from Mr. Kenneth [Lindsay] who has lived at Toynbee Hall for three years during part of which time he has held the Barnett Fellowship. He did special research on the education of adolescent children. He informed me that his Fellowship [amounted] ↑to↓ ↑£↓250 lbs. He was very much interested in addition to the memorial fund and said that he was quite sure that a large sum for the holder of the Fellowship would contribute much to increase the usefulness of the Fellowship. I have written to Prof. Adams of Barnett House Oxford, to Dame Henrietta Barnett and to Mr. [Mallon], Warden of Toynbee Hall asking that we may have directions in regard to [selecting] the holder of the Fellowship for next year, and will communicate with you as soon as I hear from them. ↑I think however that we could proceed in the selection without hearing.↓
Faithfully yours,
Jane Addams [signed]
P.S. I am sorry that the report is so meager but I am assuming that this is all you want, or am I mistaken and would you like a fuller account of the Fellowship from the start.
J. A.
