Description

The Committee on Militarism in Education was established in 1925 by John Nevin Sayre, Norman Thomas and E. Raymond Wilson with the sole purpose of removing military training from the educational system. They believed that education was the key to raising support for the peace movement and sought to remove compulsory military training from colleges and all military training from high schools. They promoted their programs with propaganda and lobbying before Congress and state legislatures. While it never succeeded in its main goals, the Committee raised awareness of the issue, leading to the removal of funding for some military programs at state and local levels.
