To the Board of Wendell Phillips Settlement:

My dear ↑Miss Addams↓

You will remember that at the meeting of the Board of Wendell Phillips Settlement on December 18th, it was decided that the settlement building be given up, and negotiations were started with the day nursery board for its sale. These negotiations are still pending, awaiting an evaluation of the property which we are securing from two sources. A board meeting will soon be called to act on this.

A committee of five was appointed to take steps toward opening a community center at the Hayes School at 258 N Leavitt Street, -- two blocks [west] of the settlement.

The committee has had several conferences with Miss Marie Merrill, community Center supervisor for the Board of Education, and Miss Twogig, principal of the school, and reports that:

1. The Hayes School Community Center, 258 N Leavitt Street, will open Friday, February ↑5th↓ at 8. P.M. A program will be given to which you are cordially invited, and Dr Stevens of the South Side Foundation for Boys Clubs will speak.

2. The Board of Education supplies the school twice a week -- Tuesdays and Fridays, -- the principal, the janitor, and an English teacher, from October 1st to May 1st.

3. The board of Wendell Phillips Settlement is assuming the responsibility for what equipment is needed, and for the salaries of four workers: -- a leader for active games, and club and game supervisor, a teacher for sewing and novelty work, and a leader in music and dramatics. This staff has been selected by Miss Morrill.

4. The budget calls for the raising of $125 a month for nine months, -- three months of which would be summer activities.

5. The treasury has a $50 balance. If you plan to make a contribution to this budget of $1125 for 1926, will you send it in now, so that the work may proceed until more funds can be raised. Checks can be made payable to Wendell Phillips Settlement, and sent directly to the assistant treasurer Mrs. Mary R Parsons, 955 W Grand Avenue.

Sincerely yours,
Lea D. Taylor [signed]
For the Committee.
