Biographical Text

Peter Cooper was a prolific inventor and businessman. His creations ranged from the steam locomotive to Jell-O. In 1848, he established the Cooper Union School in New York, a tuition-free education opportunity meant for people who had attended little to no school. In addition to philanthropy and inventions, Cooper also held a small position in public office in New York City as an alderman. Cooper died in New York in 1883.

Cooper married Sarah Bedell in 1813. They had six children, although only two survived to adulthood.
