Hannah Clothier Hull to Jane Addams and Emily Greene Balch, December 19, 1925

Dec. 19, 1925.

My dear Miss Addams, and Miss Balch:

I wonder whether you will be as flabbergasted as I was when you read the enclosed. I had wirtten twice since the last Board meeting to say with what interest we were looking forward to the beginning of the work. Miss Burnham, Miss McMurtrie and Miss Lippincott have all sent their checks for 1,000 each; Miss Cochran had pledged 1,000, and then there are some smaller amounts already in the fund. I must say that I did not feel it wise to urge Miss Rankin or hold her to it against her own desire and enthusiam.

I consulted Mrs. Lewis and this was her feeling as well. I may say in confidence to you that I felt also that Miss Rankin's decision would be somewhat of a relief to two other members of the Board, -- Mrs. Richards and Miss Hilles, and perhaps to Mrs. Taussig as well. I am enclosing my reply, and trust it will meet with your approval. I am quite sure that her decision is final, but I wanted a more definite statement than her letter signifies.

May I hear from you as to whether I have done right?

Hastily, but with the Season's most loving wishes, I am

Affectionately yours,

Hannah Clothier Hull [signed]
