My dear Miss Addams:
Your attention has perhaps been called to the newspaper reports of an address made at the recent State convention of the Daughters of the American Revolution, in Boston.
It was stated, in substance, that you presided at a meeting of the Woman’s League to Preserve Peace, in Washington, where our Government was belittled and the American flag was hissed -- and that you did not call the meeting to order.
This report was also made orally at the meeting of our local chapter, and doubtless at other Chapter meetings by their delegates who went to Boston.
As an earnest admirer of your work and personality, [page 2] and as one who appreciates the fact that a larger view of human obligation may, and indeed must, affect what is sometimes called “patriotism” in the sense of making it less narrow and less conventional -– I regret that this story has been so widely circulated. I do not happen to have seen it contradicted, or in any way modified.
It seems to me that it may do harm to the cause of world peace, by giving needless offense to lovers of our country.
Surely a love of humanity, and loyalty to the flag, as America’s symbol, need not be at odds!
May I ask for a word from you in this matter? and would it be practicable and wise to give your statement full publicity?
