Biographical Text

Lucretia Coffin Mott was educated at a Quaker boarding school in New York, where she taught once she finished her compulsory education. Mott's strong Quaker faith eventually led her to become a minister in 1821, and her sermons were often devoted to both women's suffrage and abolition. Mott's initial presence in the American Anti-Slavery Society pushed her to become a founding member of the Philadelphia Female Anti-Slavery Society. Mott devoted her personal life to abolition, often opening her home as a place for fugitive slaves to stay. Mott died in 1880.

Lucretia Coffin married James Mott, whom she met while teaching, in 1811. The couple had six children together.
