PRESS IS BEACON TO ORIENT, JANE ADDAMS ASSERTS
Newspapermen and women, through the columns of the daily press, are doing more than any other agencies to educate and modernize the huge populations of India, China, and other countries in the Far East, Miss Jane Addams told 125 members of the "fourth estate" yesterday at a luncheon in the rooms of the Press club at 168 West Adams Street.
Miss Addams spoke briefly of her travels. She described the beauties of Japan that were wiped out by the recent earthquakes and gave an insight into conditions in India as she found them during the disturbances caused by the followers of Gandhi.
"The newspapers of the far east are doing wonders in bringing civilization and modernization to the people," she said. "The men and women working for the press are doing a great work out there and you should be proud to be brother workers."
