Biographical Text

Dr. Dudley Sargent was a dignitary of the National Playground Association, a doctor at Harvard University, and director of the Hemenway Gymnasium in Cambridge. When he was in high school, he started a gymnastic club with friends, and in 1869 he was invited to direct a gymnasium at Bowdoin College. In 1875 he graduated from Bowdoin College, and in 1878 he received his M.D. from Yale Medical School while directing gymnastics at Yale. He then moved to New York City, where he directed a private gymnasium. Afterward, from 1879 to 1919, Sargent directed the Hemenway Gymnasium, and from 1879 to 1889 he worked as a professor of physical training at Harvard. From 1881 to 1916, he was director of the Normal School of Physical Training at Cambridge, Massachusetts, and after 1916 he was president of its successor, the Sargent School of Physical Education. From 1907 to 1916, he was president of the Health Education League.

Sargent married Ella Frazier Ledyard in 1881. They had one son together. Sargent died in 1924.
