Biographical Text

Cynthia Whitaker Tufts attended Smith College. Before attending college, she worked for a florist, made pocketbooks, and later opened her own dressmaking shop with her sister. Tufts also worked as the assistant to the principal of a new high school in Connecticut and later became a teacher at the Amherst Summer School. She then worked as a teacher in Englewood, New Jersey, before returning to Amherst to work as her brother's assistant when he became a school principal. Tufts wrote an autobiography about her ancestors and her life before marriage, and this autobiography was completed by James, who included her life after their marriage.

Tufts was married to James H. Tufts. Tufts died in 1920 from diabetes.
