A TRIBUTE TO MISS ADDAMS.
When the Union League club determined to devote one of its Washington birthday meetings to our alien born residents, having in mind especially first voters the question of a speaker arose. Mr. Roosevelt was to address them, but another speaker of note was needed.
The decision was left to representatives of the sixteen nationalities taking part, and the decision was prompt and unanimous. The choice was Miss Jane Addams.
A striking yet logical tribute to the best friend of the stranger within our gates. And it is worth remembering that Miss Addams is American of the oldest stock. In her character and career is symbolized the welcome which the best of traditional America offers to those who seek the land of promise.
May the spirit with which the great American republic receives the stranger be nearer each year to the spirit of Jane Addams.
