Biographical Text

Lawrence Turner Veiller was a social reformer who focused on the poor and their living conditions. He started his career by volunteering at the Charity Organization Society and then working as the plans manager for the Buildings Department of the City of New York. He was an executive officer for the Tenement House Committee, and then secretary of the New York State Tenement House Commission, where he helped draft the New York State Tenement House Act. He was a founder and head of the National Housing Association. Veiller also worked to improve living conditions for the poor, and to raise public awareness he worked with journalists such as Jacob Riis to document living conditions. After 1917 he worked on traffic regulation, expansion of subway transportation, and control of franchises. Veiller also wrote books on tenement houses, such as A Model Tenement House Law and Housing Reform: A Hand-Book for Practical Use in American Cities.

Veiller married Amy Hall in 1897. Veiller died in 1959.
