"SAILING ORDERS"
Jane Addams
A settlement periodical whose first article should come from any pen but that of Jane Addams would have as dreadful prospects of life and success as a ship that spilled off the ways unchristened. Miss Addams kindly agreed to write something for this first number of NEIGHBORHOOD. The following telegram conveys the sad news of her inability to write, and a greeting and exhortation that will be taken to heart and treasured by every settlement worker.
HULL HOUSE, Chicago, Ill., January 5th, 1928.
Awfully sorry that I have been unable to write. Please accept the following substitute:
"May the American settlements enter upon the fourth decade of their existence stimulated and held together by our Quarterly, which we hope will not only report our findings in research and formulate experience, but will also, through a faithful account of our failures and successes, stimulate to fresh endeavor.
"May the Quarterly encourage us to evoke latent capacities in the young, to cherish the settled contributions of the old, and to interpret the spiritual resources of the community towards nobler ends."
