Biographical Text

Edmund Billings was a well-known civic and business leader in Boston, MA. He served as the superintendent, treasurer, and eventually president of the Wells Memorial Institute, a charity founded by Robert Treat Paine. Through the institute and other charities, Billings joined committees to aid victims of fires and national disasters, including the 1906 San Francisco Fire and a 1908 earthquake in Sicily. He worked with the American Red Cross during World War I and was named Collector for the Port of Boston. Billings was a founding member of the Boston City Club. He died of a heart attack in 1929.

Billings married Elizabeth Child in 1896, and they had two children, Katherine and Edmund Billings Jr.
