Biographical Text

In 1886, Coit founded the Neighborhood Guild, a settlement house in New York City, now known as University Settlement House. He was, as was Addams, inspired by visiting Toynbee Hall for a 3 month period.

Coit was also interested in the "Ethical Movement" in England, where he lived most of his life. Funded mostly by his wife's, Fanny Adela Wetzlar's fortune, Coit purchased a former Methodist Church on Queen's Road in London and transformed it into an Ethical Church. He founded and became the president of the West London Ethical Society, began the journal The Ethical World, and often preached at the church he established. After his retirement, his youngest daughter, Virginia Coit, took over many of his responsibilities at the establishment, including becoming an ordained minister.
