My dear Miss Addams
Thanks for your very cordial letter; I am glad to have the chance to try this piece of work. I suppose the reason that I am willing to try is that I can say I am not the one if I find after two months that such is the case. May I ask you a few questions in confidence? I feel that the same person should not raise all money, make the budget and then pay all expenses, including her own salary and own petty cash. I, for example, feel that the enclosed budget is not easily understood. After paying rent and telephone, printing and stenographer it seems to me that "petty cash and office expenses $60." is out of proportion. I am a very new boss, but I have not seen so far the need of that item in the budget. You may say it is my business to change what I do not like, but if I appear to be filling the position of spy we will lose Mrs. Cothren and her contribution to the League is, so far, more valuable [than] mine. I have already objected to two things and won out. One that she take half salary while giving so much of her time to the election of [Cox], and the other for more publicity toward the executive committee. How can we get an outside treasurer without hurting Mrs. Cothren?
She and I both want a working committee of three women beside ourselves. Will you suggest one or two names to help [page 2] us? I thought of one from Boston, one from Philadelphia and one from New York. I could meet the Boston and Philadelphia representative at least once or twice a month and in case of difficulty get in touch with them in a few hours. From Boston Mrs. John F. Moors and Mrs. Roland Baker have been suggested. Have you an opinion on either? Please suggest some one from New York? When I once get started I shall not need to trouble you so often but I will appreciate it if you can help me a bit at first.
Sincerely and with appreciation for your confidence and gratitude for this chance to work.
