Miss Jane Addams,
Hull House,
Chicago, Illinois.

Dear Miss Addams:

I regret very much that our reference to the Tribune's report caused you distress. I was myself solely responsible for the reference in the editorial paragraphs; but I am sure that with all of us the incident struck us not as a criticism of you, but as a blazing bit of obtuseness of the part of the Department of Justice.

The letter from Mrs. Kelley and steps taken to clear up any misapprehensions on the part of Survey readers are before me on getting back from a trip. I hope that the paragraph we are publishing in this week's issue (as enclosed) will serve you.

Sincerely,
