Biographical Text

Dante Alighieri was an Italian poet in the Late Middle Ages and the author of the Divine Comedy. Dante was politically active and his involvement with the White Guelphs caused his first exile. After refusing to end his involvement with the White Guelphs, he and he and his sons were permanently exiled from Italy.

Dante was married to children Gemma di Manetto Donati. They had four children: Pietro, Jacopo, Giovanni, and Antonia. Dante died in 1321.
