Biographical Text

Patrick Shelly O'Ryan immigrated to the United States from Ireland in 1883. He became a leader in Irish-politcal life in Chicago. O'Ryan first started working as a a journalist at the The Inter Ocean and a Catholic newspaper. He obtained a law degree at Northwestern University and was appointed to the Chicago Board of Education under Mayor Harrison; he was reappointed under Mayor Dunne. O'Ryan died in 1908 from liver disease.
