My dear Mr. Ross:

I have delayed replying to your cordial letter hoping that I might be able to accept your very attractive invitation. But I have already so many engagements for June and School Board affairs entail so many special appointments for the second and third weeks of that month that I really cannot add another thing. I am afraid that this sounds selfish and unresponsive, but I really want to come very much and am giving it up with the sincerest regret. I am so glad that you are going to be in Madison and hence near Chicago. We very much need some clear thinking upon our tangled social affairs:

Faithfully yours,

Jane Addams [signed]
