Biographical Text

Ellin Prince Speyer was a popular New York philanthropist. Her marriage connected her to the resources to give generously to organizations and causes like the Teachers College at Columbia University and St. Mary's Free Hospital for Children. She also founded New York Women's League for Animals. She was president of the group until her death.

Speyer married John A. Lowery in 1871; he died in 1892. She then married James Speyer in 1897. Speyer died in 1921.
