Biographical Text

Thomas Sherman was the fourth child of Union Army General William Tecumseh Sherman. Sherman graduated from Georgetown College in 1874 and then attended Yale University's Sheffield Scientific School. In 1878, he received a law degree from Washington University in St. Louis, but he soon quit law to become a Roman Catholic priest. After being ordained in 1889, he taught for some Jesuit colleges in St. Louis and Detroit. In 1898, Sherman served as an army chaplain during the Spanish–American War. He was also a public lecturer and delivered addresses against anti-Catholic prejudice.

Sherman died in 1933.
