Description

The National Union of Women’s Suffrage Societies (NUWSS) was created by a merger of the National Central Society for Women's Suffrage and the Central Committee, National Society for Women's Suffrage in 1897. Led by Millicent Garrett Fawcett, the NUWSS sought to introduce Parliamentary bills to secure suffrage through legal means. In 1903, the Women’s Social and Political Union split off from the NUWSS in order to focus on more militant and law-breaking tactics. After years of refusing to ally with any political party, in 1912 the NUWSS allied with the Labour Party who agreed to support suffrage. By 1914 the NUWSS had over 100,000 members. The NUWSS suspended activities during World War I, but was split over the war, with many pacifists resigning when the NUWSS would not support the Women’s Peace Congress. After Fawcett’s resignation in 1919, the NUWSS, under the leadership of Eleanor Rathbone, became the National Union of Societies for Equal Citizenship.
