Biographical Text

Alexander I was a Russian aristocrat who served as Emperor of Russia from 1801 until his death in 1825. He was began as a progressive leader who fostered public education, but he did not reform serfdom. He ruled during the Napoleonic Wars, and eventually took part in the coaltion that defeated Napoleon.

He married Princess Louise of Baden (who took the name Elizabeth Alexeievna) in 1793. They had two daughters, Maria and Elisabeta who died as infants. He had a number of mistresses who bore him children: with Maria Narishkin he had Zenaida, Sophia, and Emanuel; with Sophia Sergeievna Vsevolozhskaya, he had Nikolai; with Marguerite Georges, he had Maria; and with Helena Dzierżanowska, he had Gustaw.
