Helen M Harrington was a member of Rockford College's Class of 1881, along with Jane Addams. While in college, she wrote an essay titled "Old Dreams Realized," in which she discussed new science and idealism. Harrington was a friend of Jane Addams and traveled with her to Europe. She taught at Rockford for a few years.

Harrington married William M. Alderson in 1890. They had two children together. Harrington died in 1943.
