Biographical Text

Dr. Ernst Karl Johann Heinrich Voss attended the University of Rostok and the University of Marburg before going to the University of Leipzig for his Ph.D. He immigrated to the United States in 1889. He began working at the University of Michigan in 1891, teaching German philology. He left in 1896 to begin teaching the same subject at the University of Wisconsin, While there, he was involved with the Madison chapter of the Turner Society, a national gymnastics group for German-Americans. He wrote for numerous periodicals over the course of his career and spoke at a number of events in both German and English. Also during this time, Voss published a book, "Four Decades in America," in German and was an editor of "Sixteenth Century Reprints." He was extremely proud of his German heritage and advocated for greater German representation in the government. He retired from teaching in 1931.

Voss married Aurie Vail Hedrick in 1904. Voss died in 1937.
