My dear Miss Addams; --
All of the members of the Educational Committee of the San Diego Exposition, are very sorry indeed that you will be unable to lecture for us. We hope that you will find time to see at least the Educational part of our exposition. The Smithsonian Institute has prepared the best exhibit that has ever been made showing the evolution of the human race to the present time, the life of the individual, the variation in races and the causes of dissolution.
Dr. Edgar L. Hewett, Director of the Scientific and Educational Exhibits of the Exposition, has in connection with this, a Clinic for physical examinations and hopes to add mental examinations. He has also the Traveling Exhibit of the National Child Welfare Committee, and Mrs. Dummer has sent two exhibits on Social Progress in America and in Europe, from the Chicago School of Civics. These show the best things being done today for the progress of the human race in the future. The present war impels one to do his utmost to make people more rational, and I long to add an exhibit showing the results of war, mentally, physically [illegible] and economically. One's heart aches, not only for war [page 2] brides but for all of the wives and children who are already bearing such heavy burdens and must do so for generations to come. Do you know whether any such exhibit has been or is being prepared, and if so, could you send me information about it?
Sincerely yours,
