Miss Jane Addams,
Hull House, Chicago, Ill.

Dear Miss Addams,

I know how desperately busy you are, but I hope you will have half an hour to spare for Europe and the International Movement. We are feeling rather proud of keeping up an international paper while the world is tumbling about our ears. We have a number of contributions from Germany, and a number of letters saying how pleased they are with all we are doing. Hungary and Austria say the same, and neutral countries are so fulsome in their praise of us that I cannot publish their flatteries without blushing. All this is to show you that it really is of some service to Europe to have some international link between its women and something to alleviate the prevailing bitterness. I think this will become more and more evident after the war, when, after all, the nations of Europe will have to come to some amicable arrangement and to live together on some sort of terms; then the fact that we have during these bad times kept our friendship alive and been helpful to the citizens of these other countries will make it much easier to renew relations. You are now the head of the important Women's Peace Movement in America. We have had no contributions from America to the discussion on the Basis of Permanent Peace, on which we have articles each month. I think it would be of very great value if you would kindly write such an article for an early number of our paper. You are happily outside this horrible struggle and you can speak with detachment as well as authority. May I earnestly beg you therefore to write an article on the Basis of Permanent Peace for an early issue of "Jus Suffragii". Mrs. Schwimmer has sent me the platform of the [Woman's] Peace Party for publication in the March number, and that would be very suitable, followed by an article by you in the April number.

Hoping earnestly to have a [favorable] reply to my request,

Yours sincerely,

 Mary Sheepshanks [signed]
