Biographical Text

John Maynard Harlan was the youngest son of John Marshall Harlan, a Supreme Court Associate Justice. He graduated from Princeton in 1884 and worked as a lawyer in the firm Harlan and Harlan. Harlan also served as an alderman, and then ran for Chicago's mayor in 1897 and 1905, but lost both races.

Harlan married Elizabeth Harlan in 1891. They had two children: Elizabeth and John Marshall. also served as a Supreme Court Associate Justice. Harlan died in 1934.
