My dear Miss Addams --

How very kind of you to write such a long letter explaining the whole situation! But how very wrong, considering your state of health! Ever so many thanks! As I wrote already to Miss Smith, I am deeply grieved to think that you had to suffer from such a severe attack and my only wish is that you may recover wholly from it before thinking of going back.

Of course, I had looked so much forward to your coming to Germany. It was the one bright spot after a good many rather disappointing things. But I am quite sure that every thing -- as dark as it may seem -- hides some good germ in [itself] and if I shall hear from Chicago the last week of September that you [page 2] reached your home without further attacks I shall be only too glad to have resigned. --

It would be very, very good of you to write a word to our various W.I.L. chairmen, whose addresses I am enclosing. But, please, do not do so by hand, please, do dictate & share it typed. As soon as I shall be in Gland, I shall report to you & ask you to be your secretary for a while. Will you let me? Please, do!

I expect to be in Gland by Sunday, giving my lectures on Monday & Wednesday & staying in Geneva off August 28th to attend the Peace Congress, hoping to get a room at Maison Internationale. Au revoir! My love and

My very best wishes yours devotedly
Gertrud Baer.

Will you kindly give my best regards to Miss Smith.
