NATIONAL FEDERATION OF SETTLEMENTS
July 14, 1924.
Dear Miss Addams:
I have been trying to get together material for the leaflet appeal in favor of the American participation in the Barnett Fellowship. I am worried, however, by lack of definite information on a number of points. We shall have to make some kind of statement about the English board of Trustees, and it will, I suppose, be necessary to state that the proposal that America participate in the fellowship has their hearty approval. As it stands I have nothing that I can point to in the matter. Can we get some sort of a statement from Mrs. Barnett or whoever is responsible that the plan meets with the approval of the English group; that if $12,500 is raised they will permit the appointment of an American holder of the fellowship, turn and turn about with an English incumbent. We shall need some kind of a statement as to who is to hold the funds, who will do the appointing, what reports can be made by the fellow and to whom, where and under what conditions moneys are to be held and all the bitter details people are likely to want to know about it.
Probably the matter is perfectly clear in your mind. I tried to get some of these things from Mr. Catchpool, but he was not able to be definite on any point of either policy or detail.
I hate to bother you in this matter and if you would like to have me do so, I will write to Mrs. Barnett or whoever should be approached.
Thank you very much for your attendance at the conference and your talk on Tuesday evening which was greatly appreciated by all who heard it. Many came to me and spoke of its fine quality of spirit and how much it meant to them.
Faithfully yours,
Albert Kennedy [signed]
