Dear Miss Addams,
When you visited our Women's University Settlement in Bombay, you were kind enough to say that if Miss Moinet or I came to the States you might be able to help us get into touch with the Rockefeller Trustees to whom we had appealed for help toward a permanent Settlement building in Bombay.
Now Miss Moinet has had to give [page 2] up the States owing to the illness of the friend with whom she was to have [traveled]; & I am laid low in a London Hospital with sprue having had to come home on sick leave. The Settlement is however being carried on just the same by a staff of three British Graduates & one Indian friend, also a graduate, living with them. It is a living point of contact for those of different races in Bombay.
The only reply I recieve from the Rockefeller Trustees a printed card saying that they courteously refuse [page 3] to help us in Bombay.
I was on the ship with Miss D. Thom, [traveling] with Col & Mrs Wainwright & their daughter. Before I became ill, I had one talk with them & Miss Thom was telling me how much the Rockefeller Trustees are helping in China.
I found she knew you & somehow what she said emboldened me to write & ask you whether you think we must accept this refusal [page 4] from the Rockefeller Trustees or if more could be done? We have plenty of testimonials in our [favor] from influential people in Bombay.
I was so very sorry to hear you too had been ill. I am up against a long slow time in Hospital but have every hope of getting fit again.
With kind regards to both you & Miss Smith
Yours Sincerely
Evelyn C. Gedge.
