Dear Miss Addams,
We had a splendid passage back to here. The ocean as smooth as I had never seen the North Sea even.
But conditions here are touching the utmost the German Republic can afford to go through. The murder of Rathenau was the heaviest stroke that could hit us in [page 2] this moment.
The economic situation is deplorable. All prices are raised 3 and 4 and 5 times in the meantime. We are no more far from Austrian Conditions. That is affecting our International Summer-School at Lauenstein, too, I am afraid. Even students from England, France, Switzerland have withdrawn their booking, prices getting too [page 3] high even for them.
Nevertheless we are trying our very best to make it a real international success. Frau Tunas from our Geneva Office was so good to give her whole month's holiday for doing my work here. I think it was splendid of her!
Let me thank you again & again for your great kindness. I hope you can arrange to have a holiday now. I had a lovely walk in sight of the snow mountains with "Rucksack" & "Bergstock" yesterday -- a wonderful rest and an opportunity to think over all the impressions of the last 3 months.
Kind regards to all the residents at Hull House & our friends. I mailed Käthe Kollwitz' works to the address of Miss [Norah] Hamilton [today] & hope she will get them in [written down left margin] time. My very best wishes
Most cordially yours Gertrud Baer
