Jane Addams on Immigration, April 8, 1903 (excerpt)

JAPA-1304.jpg

In speaking on "Immigration" Miss Jane Addams said large decreases in the school attendance of children of foreign birth between the first and second grades is due chiefly to the teaching of English to the sacrifice of the crafts.

"Too much stress is laid on the teaching of English," she said, "so much time is given to that branch in the first and second grades that it almost precludes the teaching of anything else."
