Miss Jane Addams,
Hull House,
So. Halsted Street,
Chicago, Illinois.

My dear Miss Addams:

I have your letter of explanation about your telegram on the cables. Our point was that we did want to draw the attention of De Valera to the fact that we had been interested in the efforts to stop atrocities and that our interest which they professed to have valued so much was in support of the treaty which would put an end to these. At the same time we wanted to suggest to the British Government that the world would not sanction the return of ↑to↓ that kind of government even if negotiations fell through.

I was not very happy about the cable myself for fear it should be recorded as an attempt to take some credit to ourselves for what we did, but I could not invent any other wording that would correct that point. [page 2]

Thank you also very much for your note about the possible appearance of the Fisk Singers before the conference. We had hoped to be able to bring it off on Christmas Day at the White House but Mr. and Mrs. Harding having gone south that was impossible.

Very truly,

L. Hollingsworth Wood [signed]
