My dear Miss Addams:
In a few days I'm sending the first section of the report for your criticism. But that isn't what I'm writing about now.
My friend Dr. Magnes tells me that he had a call from a Moscow man who is eager (and hints that some Soviet leaders share his views) to have four or five Americans not primarily connected with any party but respected for [page 2] fairness, visit Russia this spring. He named you, Dr Magnes, Frank Walsh and me! I'm honored by the company! I don't know had I could finance the trip or leave my family but I confess I'd like to go. Now this man returns soon and wants to report whether or not we are willing to consider this matter -- not pledging ourselves -- and whether if the way was open we would try to get a group ↑whether or not we were of it↓ to do this thing. I think it might be a real service. May I ask you to write promptly what you think.
Sincerely & hastily,
Norman Thomas
