My dear Miss Addams,
I look back with so much interest & pleasure to my days with you. It helped me a great deal in my comprehension of what you & Emily & your fellow members in the W. I. League were doing & standing for.
The starvation abroad has probably come home much more to the community now than at that time. I feel people very restless at the governments policy of delay & inaction.
I have heard from Emily several times, & have also had news of her from her family. [page 2]
On the whole it has been a warm winter, I am glad to say -- Perhaps I could have gone -- The last letter spoke of an epidemic of "feverish colds" & of cold weather. S said, --"It would have been a bleak experience, I am glad you did not come."
Mr & Mrs Nasmyth now write inviting me to join their party sailing on the Fabre Line, Steamer Patria from New York February 21st by the southern route & arriving in Marseilles about March 8th.
I am engaging passage & think there is every probability of my going. [page 3] Mrs N. & her children may delay in the Riviera if the weather is too cold & go at once to Geneva, -- & I can stay too if it seems best.
I wrote E that if she were ill or in need of change, or desired to take her vacation so, that perhaps she might join me there for a southern change -- but she writes me that she probably will not take any vacation except extended week ends at any time.
She wrote me of the receipt of your draft forwarded by me of $1,000 -- & also of my personal draft.
I find that all seems to [page 4] be going well at Denison House. Our little self-study, as we called it, has resulted, as I hoped it would do, rather in a criticism of the Directors than of the Executives; & so they are reorganizing committees, & showing themselves more active & responsible in the work -- & I hope they are relieving Miss Gordon at various points. She seems to feel very happy in it.
