FIGHT THE FAMINE COUNCIL,

My dear Miss Addams,
You will, I feel sure, be interested in the new work which I am undertaking, and which I am assured by two of our leading economists, is the most important work in the whole world at present, namely, the feeding of famished Europe.
I enclose a preliminary notice of the Economic Conference which the Fight the Famine Council is calling for the beginning of November. We are inviting representatives from all the principal countries affected, and also from America, though, with regard to America, we are finding it difficult to secure economists and others to attend. I am afraid it would be hoping too much to think that you might come over again. I expect that you had too much of Europe on your recent visit, and that indeed appears to be the case with some of those whose support we should most desire to enlist.
Would there be the faintest chance of your being able to influence Mr. Hoover to attend? He must have had enough of Governments by this time, and it is just conceivable that he might welcome the opportunity of meeting economists and financiers gathered together unofficially. In any case, I send you a few duplicate notices in order that you may -- if you would be so kind -- forward them to suitable persons. You may know people belonging to Mr. Hoover's organization who may either be going to Europe or may be induced to take an interest in it.
I very much hope that your health is improving. I should have liked to have seen you after your European tour. [page 2] I have written to Miss Balch and have had a reply from her, and I wish very much she could see her way to attending our Conference. We want women and we want economists, and she is both.
