Brent Dow Allinson to Jane Addams, October 27, 1917

UNITED STATES FUEL ADMINISTRATION
120 WEST ADAMS STREET

CHICAGO OCTOBER 27, 1917.

Miss Jane Addams,
Hull House,
Chicago.

My dear Miss Addams,

I am extremely sorry that I was not able to attend the tea at Hull House this afternoon to which you were good enough to invite me. I have been permitted to serve the country, at least temporarily, in an undertaking, as constructive as it is necessary, and the organization of the local fuel administration ↑here↓ is absorbing all of my energies. I leave early tomorrow for Washington on a government errand to be gone perhaps a week. You will therefore understand my inability to attend upon so short a notice.

May I not tell you that during the strain and alarm of last Spring, before America made the fatal decision, I found while at Harvard the a great source of ↑intellectual↓ strength and of American aspiration in your "Newer Ideals of Peace", and that you are an inspiration to many young men whom you do not know?

Very sincerely yours,

Brent D. Allinson [signed]
