Dear Miss Addams

How encouraging Russia is! After 400 years of despotism to throw it off. And now the liberals in Germany are coming forward too. This black time must be the darkness before the dawn and let us hope (since we have been included in spite of all some of us could do) that we can turn it into a constructive end and bring about more real democracy here too.

As I lay awake last night Amos Pinchot's plan of making the rich pay for the war came to my mind and as a pacifists <& Christians> we certainly want to serve [our] country and humanity in a constructive instead of destructive way. It occurred to me that a trust fund <for internationalism and true democracy> could be established with a small committee to administer it of which you [page 2] would be chairman and people who think and care could turn over part or all of their surplus capital to it. This to me is true patriotism for our country should lead the world in service to all. We shall still teach world citizenship in our little school and cling to our school motto "that nation shall endure forever whose people have entered into the paths of self control and world-wide sympathy."

You must feel the love, admiration and sympathy of grateful people whether expressed or not for it is deeply felt. Please save your strength and don't answer this but have someone else let me know of any way in which my husband and I can help actively or financially and we will do all we can.

Faithfully yours

Clara Sturges Johnson
(Mrs. Wm Templeton Johnson)
